ASTANA, Jan 5 Training of perpetrators for an attempted coup d'état in Kazakhstan in January 2022 was conducted throughout 2021, said the country's Prosecutor General Berik Asylov.
Speaking Thursday at a meeting of the Majilis (lower house) of the parliament, Asylov said that it can be argued that in conditions of controlled chaos, the operation to remove the country's top leadership was carefully planned, in fact, it was an attempted coup.
«I have no right to voice the specific details of the plot. I can only say that throughout 2021, the perpetrators were secretly preparing to take radical measures. Organized criminal groups were among the perpetrators. They recruited people, armed themselves, bought walkie-talkies and transport,» the Prosecutor General said.
According to him, the investigation established that certain security forces were in charge of this subversive work.
He also recalled that the criminal case against the former heads of the National Security Committee (KNB), accused of treason and an attempted coup, was investigated under the heading «top secret». «Materials have been classified as they contain state secrets. The case contains information relating to foreign policy, counterintelligence and operational-search activities. Their disclosure may harm the interests of national security,» he stressed.
Asylov recalled that the criminal case is now under consideration in court.
Mass protests in Kazakhstan began in the first days of 2022 — residents of the cities of Zhanaozen and Aktau in the west of the country opposed the doubling of prices for liquefied gas. Later, the protests spread to other cities, including Alma-Ata, the old capital and the largest city of the republic: looting began there, militants attacked state institutions, took away weapons. In response, the authorities declared a state of emergency throughout the country until January 19 and carried out a counter-terrorism operation. According to the latest data from the country's Prosecutor General's Office, 238 people died as a result of the riots, including 19 security officials.
