The Investigative Committee resumed the investigation into the death of the Moscow economist Shchiborshch; before that, the case was closed more than 15 times

The Investigative Committee has resumed an investigation into the death of Moscow economist Kirill Shchiborshch during the storming of his apartment by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 2006, which was closed more than 15 times. This is reported by the «Public Verdict».

As noted by human rights activists, the Investigative Committee made this decision after appealing the next decision to dismiss the case in October. “Today, January 25, we received a response from the Investigative Committee that the investigation has been resumed,” the Public Verdict specified.

The 37-year-old Shchiborsch was diagnosed with a mental disorder, which is why he needed medical attention. In July 2006, doctors and police officers were supposed to come to the economist, however, without waiting for the doctors, the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs began to storm the apartment.

According to human rights activists, due to his condition, the man could not adequately assess the situation, so he opened the door to the security forces with a knife in his hands. One of the policemen cut himself while trying to grab a knife. Then Shchiborshch hid in the kitchen, and the police called the special forces.

Arriving security forces beat the economist to death. Doctors recorded fractures of the base of his skull, six ribs and other injuries.

In 2014, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ordered Russia to pay 49,000 euros to the relatives of the deceased, recognizing that the country had violated the right to life ( Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights) and the right to an effective remedy (Article 13 of the ECtHR).

Three years later, the former head of the group of the special police unit (OMSN) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Sergey Danshin, was charged with abuse of power powers, which resulted in the death of Shchiborsch. However, the prosecutor's office refused to approve it. Prior to this, the security official had been charged with the same charge at least three times. />Article«Quietly».
