According to investigators, Furgal's subordinates threw two grenades into the garage of scrap metal buyer Alexander Smolsky, but he survived. They, as the prosecution insisted, also shot businessman Yevgeny Zorya and Oleg Bulatov, a man from Furgal's entourage, who, according to the prosecution, knew about the murder of Zorya.
On February 2, the jury delivered a guilty verdict on all charges against Furgal and the other defendants in the case — Andrei Karepov, Marat Kadyrov and Andrei Paley. Karepov and Paley were sentenced to 21 and 17 years in prison, and Kadyrov, who was the only one recognized by the jury as deserving of indulgence, was sentenced to 9 years 6 months in prison.
“When asked by the judge whether the sentence was clear to all the defendants, Sergey Furgal and the others they asked the judge if they were not ashamed of the verdict,” RusNews correspondent reports from the spot.
Sergei Furgal was arrested in the summer of 2020. His criminal prosecution caused months of protests in the Khabarovsk Territory. The politician himself linked his case with a conflict with a former partner of the Rotenberg brothers.
