ISTANBUL Feb 13 Sea of Marmara near Istanbul on Monday suddenly receded by 15-20 meters, scientists reassured the public: the phenomenon is caused by a pressure drop and is not associated with seismic activity.

Scientists of the authoritative Candilli Observatory came out with an explanation of the situation: according to them, this is a meteorological phenomenon caused by pressure drops, and has nothing to do with earthquakes.
Earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 with a difference of more than nine hours occurred on February 6 in the south-east of Turkey. According to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, they have become the strongest since 1939, he called them «the catastrophe of the century.»
According to the latest data, more than 31 thousand people died. The tremors, followed by hundreds of aftershocks, were felt in 10 provinces of the country and neighboring states, including Syria.
