MOSCOW, March 9 The Executive Committee of the Poltava City Council decided to rename 99 streets in the city and lanes, whose names are associated with the Russian Federation and the USSR, according to the publication «Public» on Thursday.
“The list of streets has been determined, the list of proposals has been determined. This already concerns more communist symbols. This is Matrosov Lane and so on,” Aleksey Dovgal, deputy director of the communal organization “City Development Institute”, quotes the publication.
It is reported that on meeting of the executive committee, it was decided to rename 99 toponyms. According to Leonid Bulava, deputy chairman of the working group on renaming streets in the Poltava community, names in honor of Russian or Soviet military figures, war heroes, politicians or events are subject to renaming. Voting will take place on an electronic platform and will last from 15 to 29 March.
Earlier, the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory published a list of 520 historical figures whose activities fall under the law «on decommunization», and therefore their names should disappear from geographical names.
The dismantling of monuments related to Soviet history, as well as the renaming of streets, began in Ukraine in 2015, when a law on decommunization was adopted. Recently, the Ukrainian authorities have begun to fight not only with Soviet history, but with everything connected with Russia.
