Castrol MAGNATEC HYBRID 0W-20: how oil protects Japanese and Korean car engines

Sales of a new product from Castrol began in Russia — Castrol MAGNATEC HYBRID 0W-20 engine oil. The use of this oil significantly reduces the wear of engines equipped with a start-stop system or that are part of a hybrid power plant. The oil is produced in Japan and is intended primarily for Japanese and Korean cars. Here's how it works.

Features of hybrids and start-stop systems

Why is a separate oil needed for hybrids and engines with start-stop systems? It's all about the design features. When using this system, the engine is switched off when stopped and restarted simultaneously with the start of movement. So it turns out to significantly reduce the amount of harmful emissions, but at the same time, an increased load on engine parts is created. After all, the number of cycles of starting and stopping the engine when driving through traffic jams will be very high, and the operating temperature of the oil will decrease.

With hybrid power plants, the situation becomes even more difficult in terms of protecting the engine from wear: if the car is turned off for a significant part of the time (during stops), and when driving part of the way it overcomes on electric traction, the oil temperature can drop by more than 40 degrees, compared to with normal operating temperature of conventional engine oil.

What's wrong with that? Antiwear and extreme pressure additives will not work to their full potential — the tribochemical protective layer they form will not be strong enough.

Oil for hybrids and cars with a start-stop system must have a minimum low kinematic and dynamic viscosity, since its operating temperature is lower than in classic internal combustion engines. But that's not all — a «hybrid» oil must effectively protect the engine under numerous starts and stops.

Castrol MAGNATEC HYBRID 0W-20: performance and applicability

< p> Castrol MAGNATEC HYBRID 0W-20 fully synthetic engine oil is produced only in Japan. Traditionally for Japanese oils, it is poured into the original metal packaging of 1 and 4 liters.

The oil complies with the latest API SP Resource Conserving and ILSAC GF-6A industry standards, which came into force as recently as May 2020. These specifications provide improved engine protection, including pre-ignition of the air-fuel mixture (so-called Low Speed Pre Ignition or LSPI).

The LSPI effect is a formidable enemy of today's high-tech small-displacement direct-injection turbo engines. Self-ignition of the fuel-air mixture may occur during its compression at low speeds and in partial load mode. And this can cause destruction of the pistons, and, as a result, engine failure.

Changed composition of API SP/ILSAC GF-6A oils helps to combat this problem. In modern oils, the content of calcium-based detergents «involved» in this has been reduced, and the composition of anti-wear additives based on zinc, phosphorus and molybdenum has been optimized.

API SP/ILSAC GF-6A oils also provide reduced wear and stretching of timing chains, protection against the formation of high temperature deposits on pistons and internal surfaces of turbochargers, and compatibility with modern emission control systems.

Additional Resource Conserving index in Castrol MAGNATEC HYBRID 0W-20 oil specifications indicate resource saving — we are talking about a general reduction in fuel consumption, and, accordingly, the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. >Typical characteristics of Castrol MAGNATEC HYBRID 0W-20 engine oil. Castrol MAGNATEC HYBRID 0W-20 is designed for use in gasoline engines where the manufacturer specifies an SAE 0W-20 viscosity grade engine oil. The oil is recommended for use in compatible engines of Japanese brands Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota, as well as Korean Hyundai and KIA.

How MAGNATEC HYBRID 0W-20 oil protects the engine

b>

We already wrote that traditional zinc phosphate antiwear additives, which were patented by Castrol founder Charles Wakefield back in 1935 and are still widely used in the production of oils, form a protective reaction layer only after the oil reaches a temperature of 80 ° C. Obviously, in the case of frequent engine stops during start-stop systems and regular electric driving in a hybrid power plant, the oil temperature may not reach such a mark at all.

Therefore, in Castrol MAGNATEC HYBRID engine oil 0W-20 uses Intelligent molecules technology. Polar molecules are attracted to engine parts, forming an ultra-strong protective film that remains regardless of oil temperature — even when the engine is turned off.

Thus, when using Castrol MAGNATEC HYBRID 0W-20 engine oil, the engine is protected as much as possible from wear as cold start and while driving. Significant reduction in wear of engine parts is confirmed by the industry standard Sequence IVA test (ASTM 6891). It provides an assessment of the wear of camshaft cams and valve lifters after 100 hours of bench tests on a Nissan KA24E engine at low operating temperatures.

Using Castrol MAGNATEC HYBRID 0W-20 oil in Japanese or Korean car engines with appropriate viscosity grade requirements , you will get effective wear protection in all driving conditions.
