A rare pathology was revealed in a ten-day-old baby — a malignant tumor of the liver of a large size. Such operations are complicated by the peculiarities of the organism of newborns, so the surgeons of the Sverdlovsk Regional Children's Clinical Operation (ODKB) carried out a jeweler's work. > 
The boy was born in one of the maternity hospitals in the Sverdlovsk region, and during the first examination, the doctors noticed an unnaturally swollen belly, the regional Ministry of Health. The child was immediately transferred to the Children's Hospital for diagnosis, where he was examined and found to have hepatoblastoma of the liver. This malignant neoplasm of the liver, which has an embryonic origin, is most often diagnosed in children under three years of age. Hepatoblastoma is a very rare type of cancer, it accounts for no more than 3% of cases of oncological diseases in children, in severe cases the patient requires a liver transplant.
Doctors consulted with specialists from the Center for Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology named after. Dmitry Rogachev and decided to operate the child on their own. Any surgical intervention in newborns is associated with a high risk to the life of babies, primarily due to possible blood loss.
“The volume of blood in a baby is about a glass, 250 milliliters, and the structure of the tubular tissue of the liver is completely microscopic. Therefore, only special instruments and the latest technologies were used during the operation,” said Vladislav Chudakov, a pediatric surgeon, Honored Doctor of Russia, who operated on the child.
The operation was successful, the malignant tumor was removed and sent for a biopsy. The child is currently undergoing treatment at the Center for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology, and he will have a long recovery.
