MOSCOW, 17 Mar. Olympic ice dance champion Roman Kostomarov's condition improves amid a change in treatment. However, the risk of developing sepsis remains, which may lead to a new amputation. Positive dynamics inspires hope that there is no need for another operation.
Blood supply in the hand The condition of the figure skater's hand is still a matter of concern to doctors. But according to Izvestia, doctors continue therapy and hope to avoid amputation. Doctors try to improve circulation in the arm and, if successful, will clean small areas. In an unfavorable scenario, the risk of the operation will increase significantly.
According to Match TV, the skater is conscious and can breathe without the help of a ventilator. It is noted that Kostomarov has already removed a tracheostomy (a special tube inserted into the trachea through a hole in the throat). Doctors expect that the athlete's blood supply will be restored in the near future.
At the beginning of the week, it became known that doctors were discussing the need to amputate part of the arm. But it was decided to abandon the operation, as the athlete's body was exhausted and there was a possibility of cardiac arrest.
What happened to Roman Kostomarov? In early January, the skater took part in Ilya Averbukh's ice show «The Wizard of Oz». Part of the performances took place outdoors, despite the 25-degree frost. A friend of the athlete, choreographer Maxim Stavisky, in a conversation with him, explained that Roman was already coughing, but decided not to seek help from doctors. According to the father of the deceased singer Yulia Nachalova Victor, this was the reason for such serious consequences of the disease.
“Serious problems appear when they are late with a diagnosis, and therefore with treatment. Roman, like my daughter Yulia, until the last moment did not pay attention to temperature, poor health, hoped that the body would take it out. But this does not always work out,” — Nachalov is quoted by Moscow Online.
On the night of January 10, the skater became worse, he was hospitalized and connected to a ventilator. He was later transferred to a hospital in Kommunarka, where he underwent the blood oxygenation (ECMO) procedure, which is used in emergency situations to keep patients alive. It soon became known that the skater was developing necrosis.
In February, a source said that part of Kostomarov's leg and several fingers were amputated. At the same time, doctors admitted that the skater might need a new operation. Later it became known that the athlete had a micro-stroke, because of this, it was decided to put him into a drug-induced sleep.
However, now there are more and more reports of an improvement in the athlete's condition. Doctors made attempts to bring the skater to his senses, but he could not remain conscious for a long time. At the same time, there were reports of the development of sepsis on Kostomarov's arm.
