MOSCOW, 6 Apr. A huge ruby weighing 55.22 carats was put up for auction by Sotheby's, writes CNN. The jewel was named Estrela de Fura (Star of the Fura).
This is the largest of these stones ever presented at auction, and it may also become the most expensive. The current record for a ruby is set by a stone weighing 25.59 carats. It was bought for $30.3 million in 2015. The new lot is expected to sell for a higher price.
Estrela de Fura was cut from a 101 carat rough stone. It was found at a mine in Mozambique in July 2022.
The auction is scheduled for June 8 in New York. Another notable lot of these auctions is The Eternal Pink, a 10.57-carat pink diamond. Presumably its cost will exceed 35 million dollars.
