MOSCOW, May 4. The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that the EU is urging Russia not to use the attack on the Kremlin to escalate the Ukrainian conflict.
Earlier, the Kremlin's press service reported that on the night of May 3, the Kiev regime attempted to strike drones on the Kremlin residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, two devices were disabled, there were no casualties or material damage. Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov later said that the head of state was not in the Kremlin at that moment. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a case of a terrorist attack «in connection with an attempt by the Kyiv regime to strike» with drones at the Kremlin.
«We call on Russia not to use this alleged attack as an excuse to continue the escalation of the conflict,» Borrell said ahead of a meeting of the EU development council. The broadcast was conducted on the website of the European Commission.
At the same time, statements about possible drone attacks on targets in Moscow have been heard more than once from Kyiv and from the West, including top officials and the military. Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov in March published a photo of German pilot Matthias Rust, who landed on Red Square in 1987, and accompanied it with a caption about a «swarm of Ukrainian» UAVs. The head of Ukrainian military intelligence, Kirill Budanov, said in April that Ukrainian drones were reaching Moscow and beyond. Adviser to the head of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, Anton Gerashchenko, published a 2015 video from a UAV flying over the Kremlin, saying that the Kremlin has «every chance of being in the affected area.» The Washington Post also wrote about the threats of strikes, citing classified documents that got into the network. The newspaper indicated that Budanov planned to strike at Moscow and Novorossiysk on February 24 of this year, but Washington allegedly asked them to be postponed.
