SIMFEROPOL, May 14. The Presidium of the Crimean Parliament initiates the issue of canceling the decision of 1954 on the transfer of the peninsula to the Ukrainian SSR from the RSFSR, said the head of the Crimean parliament Vladimir Konstantinov.
“
“Yes, we intend to carry out this work,” said Konstantinov.
According to him, the issue is planned to be discussed at the next meeting of the presidium of the parliament of the republic.
«We will consider this issue. We plan to entrust its detailed study to the scientific council for lawmaking under the chairman of the State Council of the Republic of Crimea,» Konstantinov stressed.
Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014 following a referendum following a coup in Ukraine. In the 2014 referendum, 96.77 percent of voters in Crimea and 95.6 percent in Sevastopol were in favor of joining Russia. Ukraine still considers Crimea its temporarily occupied territory, many Western countries support Kyiv in this. For its part, the Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the inhabitants of Crimea voted for democratic reunification with Russia, in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of Crimea «is finally closed.»
The Crimean region was part of the RSFSR until February 19, 1954, when the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR issued a decree transferring the region to the Ukrainian SSR. The initiator of the decree is the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, who worked in Ukraine for a long time. After the collapse of the USSR, the peninsula remained part of Ukraine.
