MOSCOW, May 21st. Artifacts of the 19th — early 20th centuries — a sunken ship and several bottles were found at the bottom of Lake Ladoga by an expedition as part of a research project to study historical finds «Heritage of the Ladoga Depths», the press service of the expedition reported.
After surveying the waters of Valaam Island with the help of modern equipment, divers managed to locate the sunken ship, the second one during the expedition, said the head of the Oryol diving club «DIVO», coordinator of the 1XPEDITION project Sergey Kulikov.
«
«This is a wooden ship , most likely the end of the 19th — beginning of the 20th century. To determine exactly what year it was built, more dives will be required. Divers underwater, in addition to video filming, measure the ship in order to establish its ownership, age and, possibly, its fate,” he said.

Aleksey Petrykin, head of the Oryol regional branch of the DOSAAF of Russia, noted that many interesting artifacts can be preserved on the sunken ship, and new dives of divers are needed to find them.
«
"The sunken ship is very large, massive and very beautiful. Definitely, there is something else in it. It is necessary to dive to him more than once with a large team and conduct a complete examination,» he said.
Under the destroyed parts of the ship, divers found several old bottles, said a member of the expedition, a student of the Faculty of History of OSU named after I.S. Turgeneva Nikita Knyazev.
«On the first green container there is an engraved inscription» Plant. arts. min. water Goyeri Redlich in Moscow». Judging by the grammar, the find dates back to the second half of the 19th — early 20th centuries. Most likely, the container was used for mineral drinks. The second container was used for ritual and religious purposes. It has a small volume, Sergius and Herman – the founders of the Valaam Monastery, and on the other hand – the inscription “St. Miracle Workers Sergius and Herman of Valaam”. Experts will help to establish the dating of this vessel,” he explained.

All artifacts that divers raise in the waters of Valaam are transferred to the museums of the Valaam Monastery, Sergei Kulikov said. According to him, one of the most interesting finds two years ago in Nikonovskaya Bay was the icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.
«It was an amazing find, a very interesting icon, uncharacteristic. Now it can be seen in the museum of the monastery. We hope and believe that the founders of the monastery, St. Sergius and Herman, are helping us on this expedition,» he said.
Valaam Monastery press secretary Mikhail Shishkov made a new symbolic discovery.
«Today, on the same day, divers found a bottle with the image of St. Sergius and Herman. As always, all our saints help the expedition members,» he stressed.
The expedition on Lake Ladoga from May 15 to May 25 is carried out by divers of the «DIVO» club, members of the DOSAAF of Russia with the participation of students from the Oryol State University (OSU) named after I.S. Turgenev.
