In Russia, they learned how to make bio-oil from algae and waste

MOSCOW, May 30th. The technology for the synthesis of bio-oil from seaweed and biological waste was proposed by scientists from the IKBFU. I. Kant. According to them, the development will help reduce greenhouse emissions and organic pollution, as well as reduce the consumption of fossil oil. This was reported in the press service of the university.
The search for alternative energy sources based on nature-like technologies is an important scientific direction, which, according to experts, will help ensure sustainable energy development in the coming decades.

Researchers of the Baltic Federal University. I. Kant proposed a method for obtaining synthetic oil from biomass, which is based on the real geological process of oil formation.
«»The source of biomass in our technology is large algae, excess sludge, sewage sludge and wood waste. Wet biomass is heated to 260–300 ° C in an autoclave type reactor, which leads to an increase in pressure up to 3–6 MPa,» said the scientist. Yulia Kulikova, member of the Institute of Living Systems of the Belarusian Federal University.

During this process, bonds are broken in large organic molecules, which leads to the formation of oil-like substances. Similar conditions in the environment of the ancient oceans, as scientists explained, were the reason for the synthesis of natural oil.

«Using our method will ensure the disposal of organic waste, reduce greenhouse gas emissions during the decay of biomass, and also replace part of fossil oil with bio-oil, which is recognized as carbon-neutral,» Kulikova said.

В In the course of the study, the scientific team also analyzed the composition of oil source rocks and, for the first time in the world, isolated a number of heavy metal cations that act as catalysts in the formation of oil. These data, according to scientists, are of great importance for the further development of bio-oil synthesis technology.
Synthetic oil does not require the creation of a separate infrastructure, the scientists emphasized: it can be added to conventional oil for processing at existing enterprises.

Patent No. 2787537 received for the development. At this stage, scientists are working on reducing the energy intensity of the process and increasing the oil yield, as well as on adapting the technology for other types of waste.
