Gostyukhin: “What is now being filmed about the war is basically a nightmare”

MOSCOW, May 9, Tatyana Ryzhkova. Today, the Rossiya TV channel begins showing the series Katyusha, the events of which unfold during the Great Patriotic War. Honored Artist of the RSFSR, People's Artist of Belarus and film director Vladimir Gostyukhin played Lieutenant Colonel Klyuev in it. The actor spoke in an interview about what a real movie should be like and what to expect from the premiere.
— You often acted as military personnel, and now you are playing an officer again in Katyusha. How is this hero similar to your previous skins and how is it different?
— I play characters, and everyone is individual for me. They are all different — and Gorbatov from the film «General», and Katsuba from «Sergeant», and Lieutenant Colonel Klyuev. But they are united by the fact that they are at war, they are fighting against fascism. ratio=»0.666666666666667″ data-crop-width=»600″ data-crop-height=»400″ data-source-sid=»» class=»lazyload» lazy=»1″ />

— In the first series, your hero appears as an open, simple person who respects soldiers. What development will this image get?

— I can’t tell everything, because then the viewer will not be interested in watching. But the peculiarity of my character is that he is not alone — next to him is his daughter, whom he loves very much. He did not want this, she infiltrated his unit in difficult ways. Father believes that she does not need to be in this war. She insists on her own. And this relationship with the pilot's daughter is very important for the series.
These images, the lieutenant colonel and his daughter, are very complex, and their storyline is peculiar. It was interesting to me. But let the viewer make their own verdict. I haven't seen the whole series yet, so I don't know what happened in the end. However, I tried to embody everything that the dramaturgy of this character gave me. «0.667753505053798» data-crop-width=»600″ data-crop-height=»401″ data-source-sid=»» class=»lazyload» lazy=»1″ />

There are a lot of films about the Great Patriotic War. Why is this topic so important? And what makes Katyusha stand out?

— When I read the script, I saw something real in it, really from that time. I don't like modern war films. What they're filming right now is basically a nightmare. Previously, they worked seriously on such tapes, but now the series are cooked up in a couple of months. When Larisa Shepitko and I worked on the film «Ascent», it was a deep insight into the era, into the essence of the characters. Most modern projects are just costume paintings. The costumes seem to just hang on the artists, and they are on their own.
I hope this will not happen in Katyusha. My partners are talented guys. The environment on set was good.

— And how to make films about the Great Patriotic War so that they are reliable?

— Larisa Shepitko has been preparing for Ascension for four years. I immersed myself in the material, in the history. For her, it was not just shooting — an artistic act about the war. There, every detail is thought out, every element worked. But this is impossible in the rhythm, in the mode in which modern cinema exists. The producer is constantly tweaking. Withdrawing faster means making more money.

The Soviet system was very correct, it allowed to create such masterpieces as «They fought for the Motherland» by Sergei Bondarchuk, for example. Now they won't do that. And Bondarchuk is a man who fought. Those who visited the front had a different attitude to this. Today's films are a representation of the war.
— But are there still modern war films that you approve of?

— «We are from the future» seems original — done unusually and convincingly. There are flaws there, but you look — and this story captures you, you believe in it. There are good films. However, I don't remember any masterpieces.
— There is an opinion that Russian cinema is moving away from Hollywood and returning to the standards of the USSR. What do young directors need for this?
—We need to watch not Hollywood films, but Soviet ones. They were idiosyncratic. You could always tell from the director's handwriting that this was our movie. Now you look — and you see Hollywood clichés, some action movie was whipped up in haste — and that's it. I was offered one scenario here, I opened it and gasped — completely anti-Russian, as if written deliberately against us, against Russia.

We need to move away from producer cinema to the system that was in Soviet times , to Goskino. Let them rent what they want with private money.

I am attracted in films by the history of a person, his inner life, relationships with others. In «Foreman», for example, the protagonist at first opens up to the viewer as a stern man. Then you understand: he just knows what war is. And the young guys who go to the front must convey this severity. He turns out to be a deep, real person. -width=»600″ data-crop-height=»400″ data-source-sid=»» class=»lazyload» lazy=»1″ />

— Is “Katyusha” a series about love, war, humanity, or everything at once?
— There is a lot involved in a love story, intrigue. This series does not claim to be a masterpiece — it is a human story that is part of a military plot. It is important that it is convincing, excites the viewer. I'll take a look — I'll understand how everything turned out.
