Honored Master of Sports Maxim Barkhatov won world championships five times and seven times became the champion of Russia. Today, the Powerlifting Federation of the Krasnoyarsk Territory announced the death of a famous athlete in the zone of a special military operation. He was 41 years old.
Won everything in powerliftingThe first successes in powerlifting came when Barkhatov was 18 years old. In 2000, he became the world junior champion, and a year later he repeated his success. The transition to adult sports turned out to be smooth. In 2003 and 2004, he took silver medals at the world championships and won the European Championship twice.
The only thing missing from the collection was the gold medal of the World Championship. In 2007, Barkhatov closed this gestalt, after which he became the best powerlifter in the world in the weight category up to 120 kg four more times. At the same time, powerlifting was more of a hobby for him than a main profession.

Term and death in the SVOP zoneAfter ending his career in powerlifting, Barkhatov headed the municipal enterprise «Center for the Implementation of Social Projects» in Krasnoyarsk, which in 2021 was renamed MAU Tatyshev-Park. It seemed that a person who knew everything about sports was an excellent candidate for organizing leisure and equipping places for mass recreation for the residents of Krasnoyarsk.
However, something went wrong. According to the portal «Vesti-Krasnoyarsk», the multiple world champion without bidding concluded contracts for improvement with firms that were affiliated with one entrepreneur. In return, Barkhatov received a Lexus car worth about seven million rubles and a Mercedes for a million and a half, which was purchased on lease.
Then the cars were sold to give legitimacy to the transactions, and contracts were signed with the company for more than 28 million rubles . This was in 2019 and 2020. In March 2021, Barkhatov was detained on suspicion of taking a bribe, and a year later he was sentenced to six years in a strict regime colony and a fine of 580,000 rubles. Then he ended up in the SVO zone, where he died.
