She was born in the family of actress Nadezhda Fridlyand and scientist Yakov Davidovich. Mother was familiar with Nikolai Gumilyov, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Zinaida Gippius.
She opposed the trial of Andrei Sinyavsky and Yuli Daniel and the persecution of Academician Andrei Sakharov.
Lyudmila Stern married an assistant professor of computer science at Boston University. She was friends with Joseph Brodsky and became the author of his biography, corresponded with Sergei Dovlatov.
