Hungary asked the EU to extend the exemption from sanctions on oil from Russia

BUDAPEST, Jul 3Hungary is asking the EU to extend for a year an exemption from sanctions, on the basis of which Slovnaft, a subsidiary of the Hungarian oil and gas company MOL in Slovakia, will be able to export oil products made from Russian oil to the Czech Republic, said Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Péter Szijjarto.

“In the oil supply of both Hungary and Slovakia, supplies from Russia play a very important role. Partially for the Czech Republic, these supplies also form energy security. An important exception to the sanctions expires at the end of the year. It lies in the fact that the Slovak Slovnaft, which is part of the MOL group, can sell oil products produced from Russian oil on the Czech market,” Szijjarto said at a press conference broadcast on Facebook*.

According to him, Slovnaft has launched investments worth hundreds of millions of euros so that the plant in Bratislava can process oil from other sources. «But it takes another year to complete these investments, so we are asking the European Union to extend the exemption from sanctions for a year, on the basis of which MOL Slovnaft, which is part of the group, will be able to export oil products made from Russian oil to the Czech Republic,» Szijjarto said.

MOL previously announced in its annual report that it had successfully completed a trial run of Arab Light at its subsidiary's plant in Slovakia.
Earlier, the Hungarian Energy Ministry stated that after February 5, that is, the date when sanctions on Russian oil products come into force, MOL will be able to export products from its subsidiary refinery in Bratislava only from oil of non-Russian origin. The company reported that the share of non-Russian raw materials at the Slovak plant is 30%.
