MOSCOW, 7 Jul. The possibility of imposing sanctions against Naftogaz is being considered, the head of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, made a fairly well-reasoned statement the day before, Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, told reporters. Russian gas to Europe, but he himself violates contractual obligations and behaves unconstructively. In case of continuation of unfair actions on the part of Naftogaz, sanctions from the Russian Federation cannot be ruled out.
«Of course, this was a fairly well-reasoned statement by the head of Gazprom. It outlines the reasons why such a possibility is not ruled out,» Peskov said, answering the question whether Russia can really impose sanctions against Naftogaz and whether such a possibility is being considered.< br />
Moscow will closely monitor the situation with Naftogaz and will not allow Russia's interests to be infringed, Peskov added.
“Everything, of course, will depend on how the situation develops in this area, as Miller spoke about yesterday, we will monitor this situation very carefully. Naturally, we will not allow our interests, the interests of our company to be infringed,” he told reporters.
Since May 2022, Russian gas supplies through Ukraine have decreased by 2.5 times from the guaranteed volume — to 40-42 million cubic meters per day. Then Ukraine stopped receiving gas for transit through the GIS «Sokhranivka», referring to the fact that it is under the control of Russian forces (on the territory of the LPR). So for the transit of gas to Europe there was only one entrance — the GIS «Sudzha». Gazprom then stated that it was technologically impossible to transfer all volumes to Sudzha, the company fulfills its obligations to European consumers, and transit services are paid.
As a result of the decrease in supplies, Naftogaz filed a request for arbitration against Gazprom». The Ukrainian company requires payment for services not rendered under the agreement on the provision of services for organizing the transportation of natural gas dated December 30, 2019. The head of Naftogaz, Yuriy Vitrenko, said in September 2022 that the company would not refuse arbitration proceedings, despite the risk of falling under Russian sanctions.
