SIMFEROPOL, July 7 The destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station has had a negative impact on the biodiversity of the Sivash region and Crimea, said Professor of the Crimean Federal University (KFU) named after Vernadsky, Doctor of Biology Sergey Ivanov .
““The territory of the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve, a reserve of world importance, turned out to be flooded. This happened during the period of mass nesting of birds and breeding of animals. Entire nesting colonies of near-water and steppe birds, cubs and adult mammals, a lot of invertebrates died. Most of these species form a single population with species living in the Crimean Sivash lowland. It may take decades to restore the destroyed ecosystem,» Ivanov was quoted as saying by the KFU press service.
According to him, the biodiversity of the peninsula is already under threat. Monitoring of recent years shows that many of the Crimean plant and animal species are not found in their former habitats. The reason lies in the destruction of their habitat, he noted.
According to the scientist, more than fifty species of animals are on the verge of extinction in the Crimea, 16 species are considered extinct, and the blow to the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station led to an ecological disaster and a real blow to biodiversity.
On the night of June 6, Ukrainian troops launched a series of attacks on the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, which led to uncontrolled discharge of water from the reservoir and flooding of the coastal regions of the Kherson region downstream of the Dnieper. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case on the terrorist attack. 1882657455.html» data-title=»The balance assessed the consequences of the destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP for the Black Sea countries»>
