MONTEVIDEO, Jul 17 Several countries expressed their desire to join the peace initiative of the President of Brazil, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said in an interview.
«Several countries are ready to join this effort, and one example is the announced initiative of African countries to establish a dialogue with the parties to the conflict. This will take time, but precisely this will lead to the peace we are striving for,” the minister said.
According to him, the circle of countries that want to join such efforts is growing.
The Brazilian government regarding the Ukrainian conflict adheres to the position repeatedly voiced by the president — not to send weapons to its parties, the head of the Foreign Ministry concluded.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at the end of February called on countries not involved in the conflict in Ukraine to take responsibility for advancing negotiations by settlement. In addition, he suggested creating a format similar to the G20 to discuss the situation.
This proposal was criticized in Ukraine. As Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the presidential office, said in early June, there is no question of justice in this scenario, it is «out of touch with reality.»
