Two women and a teenager who went to the backwoods of the United States in search of escape from civilization are found dead
The mummified remains of a family have been found at a remote location in a Colorado forest. According to The Guardian, relatives of the victims reported that two sisters and the son of one of them tried to live away from the bustle of the city and society.
The remains were identified as belonging to sisters Christine Vance (41) and Rebecca Vance (42), as well as Rebecca's 14-year-old son. The remains were discovered near a tent at a picnic area in the Gunnison National Forest, 14.5 km from Ohio City.
The women's half-sister, Trevala Hara, told reporters that the family traveled to remote locations last summer in an effort to escape civilization . However, they did not have survival skills and limited themselves only to Internet research and YouTube videos on this topic.
«We tried to stop them,» Hara said, «but they didn't listen. They had already made their choice.»
The remains were discovered by one of the travelers. He first saw a body near the tent, and then found two more bodies inside. Empty tin cans, books and a toilet were found in the camp. The family survived on canned food.
The remains indicated a lack of nutrition. Investigators are awaiting the results of a toxicological test and cannot yet determine the cause of death, but suggest that the family may have died from starvation, cold temperatures, or carbon monoxide poisoning while trying to start a fire to keep warm.
There was no one near the tent vehicles or weapons found. Local authorities believe that «weather conditions» and a particularly harsh winter likely contributed to the death of the family.
Apparently, the family arrived in the forest at the end of the summer and died during the winter. They also started to build something like a «canopy», but did not have time to complete it.
