MOSCOW, July 18 The «awakened» largest iceberg on the planet can «float» to the east, beyond the Drake Strait and begin to collapse under the influence of warmer currents, the press service of the Arctic and the Antarctic Research Institute.
Earlier, the institute reported that the largest iceberg on the planet A23a, which ran aground in the Wedell Sea about 30 years ago, began an active drift at a speed of over 150 kilometers per month along the coast of Antarctica.
«The iceberg can be involved in the so-called Wedell Gyre — this is the slow current of the Wedell Sea, which will carry it first to the west and then to the north. Gradually, the iceberg can be carried east of the Drake Passage. Over time, under the influence of warmer currents, waves and wind, it will be destroyed,» the message says.
The institute clarified that the iceberg poses practically no threat to navigation, it is clearly visible from satellites, so modern ship systems will detect it from a long distance.
