MOSCOW, Aug 25 The mission to land on the south pole of the moon can be repeated in 2025-2026, according to a statement by CEO Yuri Borisov on the Roscosmos website.
«Russian designers and scientists are burning with the idea of continuing the lunar project. One of the options <…> may be to consider the possibility of repeating the mission to land on the south pole of the moon in 2025-2026,» he said.
According to Roskosmos, Borisov held a working meeting at the NPO named after S. A. Lavochkin. He discussed with the staff of the enterprise and scientists the possible reasons for the unfinished mission, the prospects for the Russian lunar program, and also examined the stand, created specifically for testing the Luna-25 software.
The head of the corporation, among other things, urged not to make a tragedy out of the unsuccessful mission of the station.
«We need to draw conclusions and continue working in this direction,» he stressed.
The first domestic lunar station in almost 50 years was created at the Lavochkin Research and Production Association. The Soyuz 2.1b rocket with it was launched from the Vostochny cosmodrome at 02:11 Moscow time on August 11.
Last Saturday, Roskosmos reported that an emergency situation occurred on board that prevented the transition to a pre-landing orbit with the specified parameters. On Sunday, the state corporation announced that Luna-25 went into an off-design orbit, collided with an Earth satellite and ceased to exist.
During the flight, the station transmitted data from scientific instruments, as well as several photographs, including a snapshot of the Zeeman crater at the south pole of the moon. The main purpose of the mission was to study the soil of the natural satellite of the Earth for the presence of ice.
