Saturday, September 2 2023, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) successfully launched and placed the Indian space observatory Aditya-L1 into elliptical Earth orbit.
This was announced by the head of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Sri Somanath , who congratulated the team on the successful insertion of Aditya-L1 into orbit.
Aditya-L1 was launched into an elliptical orbit, but is planned to be placed into a halo orbit around the L1 Lagrange point of the Sun-Earth system. This place is located at a distance of 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. Moving to this orbit will take time and several maneuvers.
The observatory will study the solar photosphere and chromosphere, as well as the solar corona using instruments for detecting magnetic fields and electromagnetic particles, spectrometers and coronagraphs.
Scientists expect to receive new data that will help understand the causes of solar flares and emissions of matter from the solar corona, as well as to study space weather and the magnetic field around the L1 point.
