MOSCOW, September 12 People's Artist of the USSR, President of the Gorky Moscow Art Theater, director, theater and film actress Tatyana Doronina is celebrating her 90th birthday, the press service of the Chekhov Moscow Art Theater reported.
“Today the outstanding actress, People’s Artist of the USSR Tatyana Vasilyevna Doronina celebrates her anniversary. A graduate of the Moscow Art Theater School, she played on the stage of the Art Theater from 1966 to 1972, and then returned here in 1983. She was the incomparable Masha in “Three Sisters” and Aldonsa in “Dulcinea of Toboso”, Grushenka in “The Brothers Karamazov” and Nastya in “At the Lower Depths”, the play “About a Woman” based on the play by Edward Radzinsky and Alexei Arbuzov’s drama “Night Confession” were staged especially for her, she shone in a duet with Oleg Tabakov in «The Bench» based on the play by Alexander Gelman. In 1987, after the division of the Art Theater into two troupes, Tatyana Doronina headed the Moscow Art Theater named after M. Gorky on Tverskoy Boulevard. Doronina was born on September 12, 1933 in Leningrad. In 1956, she graduated from the Moscow Art Theater School, from 1956 to 1959 she worked at the Leningrad State Theater named after Lenin Komsomol (now the theater-festival «Baltic House»), from 1959 to 1966 she was the leading actress of the Leningrad Academic Bolshoi Drama Theater named after Maxim Gorky (now BDT named after Tovstonogov). From 1966 to 1972 — actress of the USSR Moscow Art Theater named after Maxim Gorky. Since July 1987, Doronina has been the artistic director of the Maxim Gorky Moscow Art Theater, and since 2018, the president of the theater.
As a leading actress of the theater, Doronina performed the roles of Ranevskaya in Anton Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard,” an actress in “The Old Actress for the Role of Dostoevsky’s Wife” by Edward Radzinsky, Tatyana in “The Prophet” based on the works of Alexander Pushkin, Zoya Peltz in “Zoyka’s Apartment” by Mikhail Bulgakov, Lady Macbeth in William Shakespeare's Macbeth. As a director, she directed «At the Lower Depths» by Maxim Gorky (1987), «Three Sisters» by Anton Chekhov (1987 and 1998), «The White Guard» by Mikhail Bulgakov (1991), «Farewell in June» by Alexander Vampilov (2004), «So and it will be» by Konstantin Simonov (2010), «I don't want you to marry a prince…» by Evgeniy Schwartz (2012), «Like the Gods» by Yuri Polyakov (2014), «Pygmalion» by Bernard Shaw (2016) and others.
Doronina made her film debut in 1955 in Mikhail Kalatozov’s film “First Echelon”. Leading roles in such films as “Three Poplars on Plyushchikha” (1967), “Once More About Love” (1968), “Stepmother” (1973), “Olga Sergeevna” (1975) brought her all-Union popularity.
Tatyana Doronina is a member of the Russian Writers' Union and in 1998 she published the book “The Diary of an Actress.” Tatyana Doronina's work has been recognized with various awards and prizes: the actress is a full holder of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland. An asteroid is named in honor of Doronina — 19120 Doronina, discovered by the Crimean Observatory in 1983.
