Estonian Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets, during a press conference, answered the question of what to do with cars with Russian license plates already in the country. His words are quoted by ERR.
“My point of view is that the sanctions must be implemented, and these cars will need to be confiscated, we must come to this,” the minister said. — In general, I have a question: why do cars with Russian license plates drive in Estonia, why does anyone have them? Maybe, in principle, we need to analyze the situation so that these cars with such license plates are not here? If these cars are constantly moving here, then maybe they should be registered in Estonia?”
Läänemets emphasized that this is his opinion, and not the general position of the country’s government.
Estonia has closed entry to cars with Russian license plates from 10:00 on September 13. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, commenting on the measure, said Russians “should not enjoy the privileges that freedom brings until Ukraine wins.”
Thus, the country follows the recommendations of the European Commission, which, due to sanctions on the import of cars from Russia, advises not to allow cars with Russian license plates into the EU, even during personal trips. This measure is also supported by Lithuania and Latvia, and Finland has decided not to block entry for Russian cars for now.
