MOSCOW, September 16 Iranian security forces foiled an assassination attempt on a group terrorists against the father of Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, who died in September 2022, which caused unprecedented protests in the Islamic republic, said Mehdi Ramazani, Deputy Governor of the Kurdistan Province for Political Affairs.
Earlier, the commander of the forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, the elite units of the Iranian Armed Forces) in the province of Kurdistan, Amanollah Gashtasbi, denied reports from Persian-language opposition channels about the detention of Father Amini. According to him, the man is safe and sound in his home in the city of Sekkez (located in the province of Kurdistan — the homeland of Mahsa).
“A group of terrorists who were planning an assassination attempt on Amjad Amini, the father of Mahsa Amini, on the way to the local mausoleum were arrested by security forces, as a result of which the terrorists’ plan was foiled,” Tasnim news agency quoted Ramazani as saying.
Saturday marked the anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, who died on September 16, 2022 as a result of being detained by the morality police. In the fall of 2022, unprecedented unrest and protests took place in the republic. Protesters blamed the government for Mahsa’s death, after which Iranian women began to massively publish videos on social networks in which they cut their hair and burned their hijab. At the same time, mass demonstrations under the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom” regularly took place in populated areas.
The Iranian authorities accused Western countries of supporting the protesters, who circulated subversive messages in their media, and also called on the Iranian population for revolution and the overthrow of the government in the country. Law enforcement agencies carried out mass detentions of individuals recruited by the intelligence services of Western countries, Israel and Saudi Arabia, and almost daily seized large quantities of weapons at the country’s borders intended for rioters.
