New crossover Arcfox αT5 from BAIC: an attempt to get at least a little closer to the success of Aion

The Chinese state-owned automaker BAIC has seriously taken up expanding the lineup of its not-so-successful electric vehicle brand Arcfox: the αT5 mid-size crossover is preparing to debut in a new style for the brand and with a rather ordinary technical content.

BAIC launched the electric vehicle brand Arcfox in 2017, but it has yet to become any significant player in the Chinese market: its sales in the first three quarters of this year, according to CAAM (China Association of Automobile Manufacturers), amounted to only 15,056 cars (+ 57.5% compared to APPG). For comparison, let’s say that the Aion brand, launched in 2018 by the GAC concern, sold 359,487 electric trains (+97.2%) during the same period. Arcfox and Aion produce electric cars at approximately the same, near-premium price level, but Aion managed to quickly get promoted, while Arcfox did not.

At the beginning of this year, there were only two models in the Arcfox range — the mid-size crossover αT and the large flagship liftback αS. The debut urban electric car Life, with which the Arcfox brand entered the market in 2017, has already left the stage, and the Arcfox GT supercar, presented in 2019 in Geneva, never became serial. In January, the funny mommobile Arcfox Kaola had its premiere; sales began in September. By the end of this year, the premieres of two more new Arcfox models are expected — related to the αS5 sedan and αT5 crossover. According to the Chinese magazine Autohome, the Arcfox αT5 crossover will officially debut on November 17, but its Chinese colleagues have already “snapped” it and talked about its key features.

Arcfox αT5 is positioned as a junior model in relation to the Arcfox αT crossover, which has been produced since 2020. Overall length αT5—4690 mm, width—1936, height—1650 mm, wheelbase—2845 mm. The front suspension is McPherson type, the rear is independent multi-link. The only electric motor in the Arcfox αT5 is located on the front axle and produces 185 kW (251.5 hp) or 200 kW (272 hp) depending on the modification. The battery capacity is from 65 to 85.8 kWh, the range on one charge is from 520 to 660 km according to the CLTC cycle. Top speed is limited to 182 km/h. Standard wheels are 19 or 20 inches. More detailed technical specifications will be known after the premiere.

From the front, the Arcfox αT5, as you can easily see, resembles some Toyota models, in particular the latest generation Corolla, The front of the Arcfox αS5 sedan will be made in the same style. The rear of the crossover is completely featureless, as is the interior design, executed in the spirit of extreme minimalism: there are no physical buttons on the front panel, there is no instrument panel, all information and control of secondary functions are tied to the central multimedia tablet.
