HWE Puzzle: a stylish urban van from Japan is preparing to conquer America

The young Japanese company HW Electro has developed a small electric van Puzzle with an interesting design, its body resembles a toy assembled from a Lego set, production should start in 2025.

Headquartered in Tokyo, HW Electro (HWE) was founded in 2019 with the goal of producing and selling low-cost commercial electric vehicles. HWE began with the localization of Chinese models — for example, the one-ton HWE Elemo-L van is a slightly restyled Karry Dolphin (Karry is a subsidiary brand of Chery).

The Puzzle van is the first original development of a Japanese company, although it is possible that Chinese components will be used in it. The HWE Puzzle premiered last month at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 in Tokyo, and recently the HWE Puzzle presentation took place in New York, as the United States will be one of the key foreign markets for this model.

The front panel under the headlights and the front roof section above the flat windshield are one piece and one die, only the front panel has holes drilled for the headlights. The sills and side roof panels are also one piece, the lower parts of the doors and door handles are the same on the right and left.

The theme of puzzles is continued in the cabin: the door cards and the front panel are dotted with holes into which you can insert standard accessories — cup holders, smartphone holders, storage pockets, armrests, bag hooks, etc. The steering column and electronic instrument panel are designed to make it as easy as possible to convert a right-hand drive van into a left-hand drive van. When folded, the back of the passenger seat turns into a table for dining or working with a laptop. There are sockets and USB connectors on the front panel and in the body pillars for powering external devices. There are also several household sockets outside above the front wheel arches behind the opening hatches. The presence of rear hinged doors hints that the van may also have a cargo-passenger version with a second row of seats.

Overall length of HWE Puzzle — 3395 mm, width — 1475 mm, height — 1920 mm, wheeled base — 2480 mm. Wheels are 15-inch. Load capacity — 350 kg, useful volume of the body is not specified. There is no information about the power plant, we only know that Puzzle will be able to travel about 200 km on one charge. A solar panel is built into the roof of the van, which will recharge the battery during daylight hours.

We add that there are many projects similar to HWE Puzzle: in concept (compact size, simplicity and modular design) to The British Helixx Cargo is closest to the Japanese van.
