
VIENNA, 25 Nov. On Friday evening, a 29-year-old citizen Syria caused serious damage to the property of one of the churches in Vienna, tearing a Madonna statue from its mounting and stealing a wooden cross, police in the Austrian capital said on Saturday.
It is clarified that the act of vandalism occurred in the most densely populated area of Vienna, Favoriten. A large number of migrants live here.
“»Employees of the city police department of Favoriten were alerted due to the fact that a man allegedly entered the church, tore the Madonna statue from its mounting and stole a wooden cross. Thanks to witness statements and video surveillance, the 29-year-old Syrian citizen was found in the immediate vicinity of the church and detained,” the release says.
It is noted that the stolen wooden cross was later returned to the church.
