MOSCOW, January 7 Israel has proposed that Cairo install sensors along the corridor between Egypt and the Gaza Strip and provide the right to send surveillance drones if they are triggered, the Wall Street Journal reports with reference to on high-ranking Egyptian officials.
“»Israel has proposed installing sensors along the Philadelphia Corridor, a stretch of Egyptian-controlled land on the border with Gaza… Israel… has also offered to provide direct notification in the event of sensor activations and the right to send reconnaissance drones to the area,» it says in the publication's message.
According to Israel, the Palestinian Hamas movement used the corridor to bring in weapons and people through the tunnels. Thus, Israel wants to be notified in advance of possible attempts to restore the tunnels.
Cairo said it would consider installing sensors but stressed that issuing notifications or approving the dispatch of drones would be a violation of Egypt's sovereignty, officials said.
Negotiations on these issues are ongoing, officials noted.
