
BEIJING, Jan 23 Number of landslide victims, that descended on Monday in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan has risen to 11, and the search for missing people continues, local authorities said.
Earlier it was reported that eight people died.
A landslide occurred on Monday at 5.51 (0.51 Moscow time) on several villages in Zhenxiong County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province. 47 people found themselves underground and contact with them was lost.
«As of 22.00 local time (17.00 Moscow time) on January 22, 11 people who were listed as missing were found at the scene, all of them were without signs of life,» the Yunnan provincial government said in a statement on the official account on the WeChat social network.
A search and rescue operation continues at the site of a natural disaster, involving over 1 thousand firefighters and professional rescuers, as well as more than 170 fire engines.
Previously, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for every effort to be made to search and rescue people trapped underground as a result of a landslide in southwest China.
