MOSCOW, February 2 The USA may in the very near future strike Iranian military installations in Iraq and Syria in response to attacks on US troops in the Middle East, the Wall Street Journal writes, citing unnamed officials in Washington.
“Responses are expected to begin as early as this weekend,” — the publication says.
According to CBS television sources, Washington's planned «multi-level» measures will combine military action with other steps that can be adjusted to convey a signal of reluctance to further escalation.
US Central Command reported that an American base in northeast Jordan was attacked on Sunday. Three servicemen were killed and more than 40 people were injured.
As reported by the media, citing American government sources, the drone used to carry out the attack was allegedly produced by Iran.
The White House promised to respond to this attack. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the response could be “multi-layered” and “occur in stages.”
According to Politico, the Pentagon was considering several options: striking the Iranian navy in the Persian Gulf or targeting the Iranian military in Iraq or Syria.
The New York Times, citing Iranian sources, claims that Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has given orders to avoid direct military conflict with the United States.
