The transfer of Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR was a tragedy for Ukraine, the senator said

SIMFEROPOL, February 19 Decision on the transfer of Crimea from the RSFSR to the Ukrainian SSR, which occurred on February 19, 1954, became tragic, first of all, for Ukraine itself, says Senator from Crimea Sergei Tsekov.
The transfer of the Crimean region from the RSFSR to the Ukrainian SSR took place on the basis of a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated February 19, 1954.

“This, of course, was a lawless decision, and this is a tragic date and a tragic decision, and above all for Ukraine. This event became one of the most important factors in the destruction of Ukraine, after it gained independence. Destruction — because everyone understood that this «The gift that Khrushchev made in 1954 was completely wrong and unfair. And Ukraine always understood that it acquired Crimea illegally and after the collapse of the USSR did not treat us as its territory — it used and robbed the peninsula,» Tsekov said.

Everything that was created in Soviet times in Crimea and went to Ukraine after the collapse of the USSR, the senator said, was only used and destroyed. At the same time, the Ukrainian SSR at the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union was the richest and most promising republic in terms of its potential.
The senator noted the special position when making the decision to include Crimea into the Ukrainian Republic of Pavel Titov, the first secretary of the Crimean regional committee of the All-Union Communist Party, who opposed this decision and was, as a result, transferred to another job. Tsekov noted that Crimean social activists and authorities plan to perpetuate the memory of the leader in Simferopol.
Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014 following the results of a referendum after the coup in Ukraine. In the 2014 referendum, 96.77% of voters in Crimea and 95.6% in Sevastopol were in favor of joining Russia. Ukraine still considers Crimea its temporarily occupied territory, and many Western countries support Kyiv on this issue. The Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the residents of Crimea voted for reunification with Russia democratically, in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Crimea issue is “finally closed.”
