Tinkoff warned about a fraudulent scheme with the write-off of the “tax on SVO”

MOSCOW, February 28 Fraudsters have come up with a new deception scheme and are sending letters to bank clients warning them about the write-off of a “new tax on SVO”, the press service reported Tinkoff Bank.
«Immediately after the end of the tax period, when millions of people paid receipts from the Federal Tax Service, attackers began sending warnings by email on behalf of banks. Allegedly, a new tax for a special military operation will soon be written off from clients' accounts — this is required by the new law,» — the release states.

In the letters, the attackers frightened people that if they did not urgently go to their personal account and sign an application to refuse payments, then they would have to transfer tens of thousands of rubles to the budget. Clients of all major banks receive such mailings; scammers even style the letters to match the corporate style of credit institutions.

The victim is told that in order to have the tax waived, she must sign a waiver of assessments. To do this, she is asked to follow a link leading to a fake bank website that looks similar to the real one. When a person enters their personal account login information on such a page, they end up with scammers. As a result, criminals can withdraw all the money from the account or issue a loan in the name of the victim (if they manage to bypass the banking security system).
Tinkoff Bank noted that the scheme became popular at a time when people are massively paying various taxes and contributions. Fraudsters regularly use major news events to make their scheme look as believable as possible. This allows you to quickly gain trust and deceive more people, the press service explained.
