
MOSCOW, March 1 It is important for Finland to have a nuclear deterrent force, in practice, this is ensured by the deployment of US nuclear weapons, said the President of the Republic, Alexander Stubb.
«I think it's important that we have a nuclear deterrent,» he said at his first news conference after his inauguration. Stubb also added that in practice, NATO's nuclear deterrence is ensured by US nuclear weapons.
He noted that legislative reforms are within the powers of the government and parliament. At the moment, Finnish legislation prohibits the import, manufacture, storage and detonation of nuclear charges in Finland.
Earlier, Prime Minister Petteri Opo said in an interview with the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita that Finland does not intend to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory.
Russian Ambassador to Finland Pavel Kuznetsov said earlier that the idea of transiting nuclear weapons through Finland is dangerous and unpredictable, Russia is counting on Finland's prudence in this matter.
