MOSCOW, March 8 The Russian army will take even more control territories before the West demands peace negotiations from Ukraine, University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer said in an interview with the YouTube channel Daniel Davis/Deep Dive.
“The (US Presidential) administration will have to work with the Ukrainians to push them to negotiate with the Russians. <…> The situation is deteriorating rapidly, and the Russians will take more territory,” he noted.
Mearsheimer also emphasized that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will not be able to prevail in this conflict. For this reason, he added, the West must understand that negotiations are a reasonable solution to the situation. In his opinion, Western leaders are mistaken that NATO troops or additional supplies of weapons will help the Ukrainian Armed Forces win the military confrontation with Russia.
“The only way out is diplomacy,” the expert concluded.
Moscow has repeatedly indicated that it is ready for negotiations, but Kyiv has introduced a ban on them at the legislative level. The West is calling on Russia for negotiations, for which Moscow is showing readiness, but at the same time the West is ignoring Kiev’s constant refusals to engage in dialogue.
Earlier, the Kremlin stated that there are no prerequisites for the situation in Ukraine to move into a peaceful direction now; Russia’s absolute priority is achieving the goals of the special operation, at the moment this is only possible through military means. As the Kremlin stated, the situation in Ukraine can move on to a peaceful course, provided that the de facto situation and new realities are taken into account; all Moscow’s demands are well known.
