MOSCOW, March 9 The United States has threatened to impose sanctions against the Austrian Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) for doing business in Russia, writes the online publication EUobserver with link to a press release from the US Treasury.
According to the publication, the American department warned the RBI about the risk of being “cut off from the US financial system” if it continues to do business in Russia.
Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs Anna Morris discussed this situation with the Austrian government and the bank's management, writes EUobserver.
At the same time, the RBI refused to comment on this discussion “for reasons of principle.”
In Russia, the Austrian Raiffeisen Bank International AG has operated Raiffeisenbank since 1996. The RBI is considering possible options for its future, including an exit from the capital. According to the results of last year, the company's staff is about 44.9 thousand people, of which 9.9 thousand are in the Russian Federation.
