Avdeevka is a northern suburb of Donetsk, turned by the Ukrainian Armed Forces into a powerful fortified area, which was eventually taken by the Russian army. From its territory, Ukrainian troops have been shelling peaceful areas of Donetsk since 2014. On the night of February 17, the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Syrsky, under pressure from the Russian Armed Forces, gave the order to leave Avdeevka. However, later the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the order came a day after the uncontrolled flight of Ukrainian units from the city began. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, units of the Center group of troops liberated Avdeevka during offensive operations on February 17 and immediately advanced to a depth of 8.6 kilometers. The total area of the liberated territory was 31.75 square kilometers.
