Stunned archaeologists were amazed by reports of giant skeletons found in caves

The Indian legend of huge red barbarians continues

Stunned archaeologists are studying reports of giant skeletons in caves in Nevada, where they discovered a worn sandal measuring 15 inches (38 cm), as well as massive prints palms on the walls. The ancient human remains in Nevada Cave were reportedly those of giant men. Native American oral history provides clues to the history of the red-haired, barbarian race of people. Presumably, these invaders were locked in a cave, where they all died.

The Indian legend about huge red barbarians continued

Archaeologists have long been puzzled by claims that a long-vanished group of giant people, standing up to 10 feet (three meters) tall, once lived in the southwestern United States, writes the Daily Mail.

Over the past century Excavations at a cave in Lovelock, Nevada unearthed huge human skulls, 15-inch sandals and massive handprints that continue to arouse the curiosity of scientists and the public.

Claims of these «Lovelock Giants» came from Native Americans who told stories of a brutal tribe of pale-skinned, red-haired invaders who waged war on native groups before eventually being trapped in a cave and destroyed.

According to archaeologists, this story is most likely an exaggeration of the facts or even outright fiction, but some evidence continues to inspire believers in this legend, notes the Daily Mail.

Although the first artifacts associated with Lovelock's giants were discovered in the early 1900s, stories of giants continue to resurface as experts and ordinary people hope to finally get to the bottom of the truth.

But it all started with that a pair of miners first discovered the giant remains in 1911. They searched there for guano, bird or bat excrement, which has long served as a valuable source of fertilizer and an ingredient in gunpowder.

But when the searchers delved into the guano, they discovered more than they expected: more than 60 human skeletons. And some of them were reported to be unusually large — seven to eight feet in height.

«One of his remarkable finds was a skeleton found about twenty miles south of Lovelock, Nevada, which showed that the body of which it was composed was exactly seven feet seven inches in height,” according to a biography of John T. Reed, a mining engineer who worked at Lovelock, published in 1935.

There is no evidence of this find, but excavations of the cave in 1912 and 1924 yielded thousands of artifacts. Many of these finds were as expected: baskets, duck calls, arrowheads and ceremonial objects carved in the shape of animals.

But there were also some extremely strange finds, including giant sandals apparently worn by People. The length of these boots is about 15 inches, which roughly corresponds to shoe size 29 in the United States, writes the Daily Mail.

Radiocarbon dating later showed that the age of human remains and plant material in the cave ranged from 2030 to 1218 BC.

Another strange find was a handprint apparently engraved on a stone that was twice the size of an average human hand.

Reports from these excavations apparently spoke of the height of the giants: as of 1931, they were reported to be between 8.5 and 10 feet tall .

Notably, some of them had red hair, which sharply distinguished them from the local Paiute tribe of Native Americans.

While their existence may remain a mystery, oral traditions may provide some clues, writes the Daily Mail.

Although their existence may remain a mystery, oral traditions may provide some clues, writes the Daily Mail.

The Paiute tribes that inhabit the area tell stories of a group of barbarians called the Si-Te-Kah who reportedly settled in the area 3,000 years ago. According to Paiute mythology, the Si-Te-Kahs then went to war with them and their neighbors — and they also had red hair.

The tales of 16th-century Spanish conquistador Pedro Cieza de Leon seemed to confirm the existence of a ferocious and mysterious group of red-haired barbarians. In Peru, he heard a story about a race of giant men who «sailed across the sea on rafts of reeds, like large boats; some of them were so tall that below the knee they reached the height of an ordinary person of average height.»

This story is consistent with the history of the Peruvian aborigines who crossed Lake Titicaca in boats made of reeds. According to Paiute legend, the tribes eventually united to fight Si-Te-Kah. They drove them into a cave, pelted them with arrows and lit a fire at the entrance. Some of the invaders were killed by arrows, some by fire, and some were suffocated by smoke.

According to legends, all Si-Te-Kahs were killed in this skirmish.

And indeed, archaeological excavations indicate a large fire at the entrance to the cave.

But some historians explain this evidence differently.

First, the remains of the «giants» could only belong to tall people, according to a study conducted by the University of Nevada, which showed that they were only about six feet tall, not eight or 10.

In Sarah Winnemacchi's book Hopkins's history entitled «Life Among the Paiutes: Their Grievances and Claims» makes no mention of giants, but there is a mention of barbarians.

And historians note that aging in dry desert conditions can lead to dark hair will turn red, which may explain the appearance of red-haired remains.

Moreover, historian Adrienne Mayor wrote in her book Fossil Legends of the First Americans that local entrepreneurs may have simply exaggerated the size of human remains, to attract tourism to the region.

Currently, the historical museum in Winnemucca, Nevada houses many of the artifacts found in Lovelock Cave.

In 2014, a crowdfunding campaign to further explore the caves collected only $10.
