“We call on all members of the international community to support Palestine’s application for membership in the United Nations,” Polyansky said.
Previously, Palestine officially asked the UN Security Council to consider it request for admission to the UN, its request was supported by the Arab Group, OIC and the Non-Aligned Movement, follows from two letters sent to the UN Security Council. The first deputy permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, said that Russia supports the admission of Palestine to the United Nations.
Israel has been a member of the UN since 1948.
The admission of states to UN membership is carried out by a decision of the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council. The application is first considered by the Security Council. For the Security Council to accept a recommendation on admission, 9 votes in favor out of 15 in the Council are required. At the same time, none of the 5 permanent members (China, Russia, Britain, USA and France) should be against it. Once the Council makes a recommendation for admission, it is submitted to the General Assembly for consideration. To admit a new state to the UN, two-thirds of the Assembly members vote in favor.
