Yesterday evening, 13 April, an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred in the area of the Kuril Islands coast, reports the Sakhalin branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The epicenter of the seismic event was located in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 85 kilometers southeast of the village of Gornoye, Kuril region, on the island of Iturup. The depth of the earthquake was 47 kilometers.
Although the information is still being clarified, seismologists note that residents of Iturup settlements could feel it with a force of 2-3 points. Such observations may include shaking of buildings, slight vibration of objects and slight swaying of furniture.
The Kuril Islands and the Far East are subject to tremors quite often. There are several seismic zones there. One of them passes from the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench and heads towards the continent. The second seismic zone stretches along the Okhotsk coast of the Greater Kuril Islands.
In April alone, seismologists have recorded tremors in the Kuril Islands region four times already.
