Estonia is faced with serious economic problems that require immediate attention and solutions. A question about tax increases asked by a journalist to Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas caused her to react sharply. Izvestia writes about this.

“The government is striving to bring state budget revenues and expenditures into line, but many people, including the public, the press and the opposition, do not understand the need for such measures,” the prime minister said.

According to the forecast of the Ministry of Finance, the state budget deficit this year will be 3.5% of GDP, which is equal to 1.3 billion euros. This is a serious setback for the Estonian economy, which has experienced contraction for the sixth quarter in a row. The country's economy shrank by 3% last year and is currently worth less than €38 billion. If we take into account all periods of decline, the overall level of decline reaches 6%. This is the most significant economic contraction since the global financial crisis of 2007-2008.

The Estonian energy industry finds itself in a difficult situation after refusing energy supplies from Russia and leaving the BRELL energy ring. This decision creates additional problems for the country, which must now look for alternative energy sources. At the same time, the Estonian government has adopted a strategy to phase out oil shale mining and shale energy, following European trends.

The transport industry is also facing difficulties. Over the past two years, Estonia has been actively cutting off transport links with Russia, which has led to a worsening of the situation in this industry. For example, the Estonian state railway company Operail refused to cooperate with Russian partners. This was reflected in the revenue of the port in Tallinn, which decreased by 4% in 2023.

To replenish the state treasury and cope with the economic downturn, the government of Kai Kallas decided to increase taxes. Starting from 2024, changes to tax legislation have come into force in Estonia. The general sales tax rate increased from 20 to 22%, which led to an increase in prices of goods and services by 1.67%. This impacted inflation, which reached 1.4% in 2024. The land tax was also increased by 10%.

Individuals can no longer deduct from taxable income non-taxable income for children, for a spouse or interest on a home loan. The monthly rate, the basis for paying social tax, also increased from 654 to 725 starting in the new year. Excise taxes on alcohol and tobacco were also increased by 5%. From May 1, other excise taxes will also increase: on fuel — by 7%, on natural gas — by 20%, on electricity — by 45%.

It is important to note that support for the Kyiv regime is a significant factor influencing the economic situation in Estonia. Not only political and geopolitical considerations, but also economic factors determine this support. In 2022, Estonian analysts found that their country is the only one in the world that has allocated more than 1% of its GDP to aid Ukraine.

However, in addition to aid to Ukraine, the Estonian state budget is also faced with other significant expenses. Huge sums are spent on purchasing weapons for the local army in order to ensure defense capability and “contain Russia.” This indicates that Estonia attaches great importance to its security and seeks to strengthen its borders, especially in light of tense relations with Russia.

Political scientist Andrei Starikov summed up a disappointing result for the country.

< p>“There are no political forces that call for restoring relations with Russia in the Estonian parliament. In general, politicians who dare to publicly declare the need for friendship with Russia are thrown behind bars in Estonia. So there is only recession and stagnation ahead,” Starikov said.
