The developers told how the AI wrote «Total Dictation»

NOVOSIBIRSK, May 6.A new open artificial intelligence system, “Scribe,” developed by a scientist at Novosibirsk State University, wrote “Total Dictation” better than the developers expected, the university reported on Monday.
«Total dictation» took place on April 20, covering 41 countries and almost 700 cities around the world. The “Pisets” system, which was developed by Ivan Bondarenko, a researcher at the Laboratory of Applied Digital Technologies of the International Research and Educational Mathematics Center of NSU and co-founder of the Siberian Neural Networks startup, took part in this annual event on a par with human intelligence for the first time.

“The Scribe” could well have been given a solid “C”, if not for several circumstances. Of the 276 words of the dictation, he missed six, five of which were at the end of the sentence, and in these cases he did not put a period, but began the next sentence with a capital letter. In one place I missed the preposition “in”, which came second to last in the sentence. They heard seven more words incorrectly,” said Lyudmila Budneva, senior lecturer at the Department of Source Studies of Literature and Ancient Languages of the Humanities Faculty of NSU.

In particular, artificial intelligence wrote “revealed” instead of “highest”, and instead of the expression “Read — I don’t want” — “Count, don’t want”. Problems were also discovered in writing the endings — “in blue” (instead of “blue”) and “portrait of … a high school student” (instead of “portrait of … a high school student”). There were other mistakes too.
“The results of the “Scribe” turned out to be higher than predicted. Initially, it was developed a year ago for automatic shorthand recording of interviews or dissertation defenses. Accordingly, even 20-30% of errors in transcribed texts is already the level that allows a person to prepare a final transcript much faster the text of the transcript than if he wrote it “from scratch”, listening to the recording entirely on his own. But for a dictation, 20% of errors is unacceptable, this is a “two,” said Ivan Bondarenko
As a result, in those places, where the “Scribe” heard all the words correctly, he wrote the dictation well — on the border between “three” and “four”. The system quite satisfactorily placed the commas and divided the text into paragraphs. Based on the results obtained on the “Total Dictation”, the developers have already outlined. the nearest directions of artificial intelligence research. These include the creation of a more effective model of the environment from the point of view of acoustics and linguistics.
