TBILISI, May 26. Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili proposed to political parties «Georgian Charter», which is an action plan for the autumn parliamentary elections and after them, she announced this during a speech at a celebration in honor of Independence Day.
“I propose an action plan, a “Georgian charter”, around which I urge the political parties to come to an agreement…” said Zurabishvili.
Later, the presidential administration published a document stating that all political parties that signed this charter and which will receive a mandate following the parliamentary elections on October 26, 2024, undertake to fulfill the conditions written in this charter by the end of the first spring sessions. Among the conditions are the holding of early parliamentary elections next year, the repeal of all laws “that harm the European future,” judicial reform, and reform of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
«Today's political conditions and electoral environment do not allow us to hold ordinary elections, where everyone will be given the opportunity to present themselves, their program. In these elections we have to decide not for whom we vote, but for what we vote.» “We vote. These elections will actually become a popular referendum in which we need to answer the question of whether we want Europe or not… This parliament must fulfill its obligations under the charter. After that, it will return the mandate to the voter and hold early parliamentary elections in a new, free environment,” — said Zurabishvili.
According to her, the document does not imply the unification of political forces for the elections.
A number of opposition parties have already expressed their readiness to sign the president's charter. Among them is the largest opposition political force, the United National Movement.
