Belgian Foreign Minister Labib called on EU countries to deprive Hungary of its voting rights
Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Labib has called on governments of European Union (EU) member states to initiate proceedings to strip the voting rights of Hungary, which is due to take over the presidency of the European Council next month. The Belgian diplomat said this in an interview with Politico.
«We have a Europe that is struggling to move forward, and unfortunately, some states — one state in particular — are increasingly adopting a transactional, blocking stance,» Labib said, hinting at Hungary.
She advocated initiating the EU's censure procedure under Article 7 against Budapest, but, as the Belgian Foreign Minister noted, this is an extreme step to strip Hungary of its voting rights.
In addition, Labib added that Budapest is under the Article 7 procedure. 7 and is increasingly isolated because the country allegedly does not respect European values, the values of freedom, freedom of expression and the independence of the judiciary.
In July, Hungary is set to take over the presidency of the EU Council for six months, which will give Budapest more power in making various kinds of decisions within the European Union
