The long-awaited premiere of the new generation BAW 212 frame SUV took place in China, for now it is presented in a five-door body, but later a three-door and a pickup truck will appear .
The classic frame BAW 212 (also known as Beijing BJ212 in the past), which has been produced with short interruptions since 1965 and is not yet going to retire, is considered a Chinese legend and the ancestor of all local SUVs; earlier examples (for example, Changjiang 46) were clones of the American Jeep C.J. In turn, the BAW 212 was made with an eye on the Soviet GAZ-69, but in general it can be considered an original Chinese development. Externally, the BAW 212 is similar to the UAZ-469, but the UAZ-469 entered production only in 1972, so the “Chinese” in some sense anticipated the design of our classic UAZ, now known as Hunter.

From the company BAW (Beijing Automobile Works) the modern state-owned Chinese automaker BAIC grew, but today BAW and BAIC are connected only by history. In 2001, BAIC spun off BAW into a separate company, in 2020 it sold it to the private investment holding Qingdao Fulu Investment Holding Group, which in 2023 sold BAW to the diversified industrial group Shandong Weiqiao Pioneering Group.
New BAW 212
The all-new BAW 212 was announced back in 2021, but due to a change in ownership and organizational upheavals within the company, the development of the next generation BAW 212 was put on hold, and the car presented today has nothing in common with the failed project of 2020-2021. The real new BAW 212 presented today is noticeably larger than what was shown earlier in the pictures: the overall length of the five-door version is 4705 mm, width — 1895 mm, height — 1936 mm, wheelbase — 2860 mm. Ground clearance has not yet been announced, the approach angle is 40 degrees, the departure angle is 36 degrees.

The new BAW 212 retains stylistic similarities with its predecessor (there is even a searchlight on the left front fender) and its fundamental layout, but all components are designed from scratch, the frame and solid axles are new, and a modern 2.0-liter gasoline engine is installed under the hood turbo engine with 252 hp paired with a hydromechanical automatic transmission.

The all-wheel drive system has also not changed fundamentally: a classic part-time with a rigidly connected front axle and a reduction gear in the transfer case. The transfer case modes are activated by buttons on the center console, next to them there are buttons for turning on cross-axle differential locks, unlocking the anti-roll bar and activating various electronic driver assistants. The handbrake is electromechanical, its button is located to the left of the automatic transmission selector.
New BAW 212
There are no other technical details yet, the start date for sales of the new BAW 212 is also unknown, but we believe that the SUV will hit the market by the end of the year. 212 is now a separate sub-brand of BAW, under which several models with “hydrocarbon” and hybrid power plants will be offered, the next new products will be a shortened three-door version of the SUV presented today and a pickup truck with a double-row cab based on it — it is obvious that in this way BAW is creating a complete analogue American family Jeep Wrangler/Gladiator.

The BAW company is not yet officially represented in Russia, the new sub-brand 212 needs time to properly develop in its homeland, but, Of course, a modern hardcore frame SUV in a classic style will be of interest to many consumers outside of China, so its export deliveries are only a matter of time.
