TEHRAN, June 17 Acting Foreign Ministers of Iran and Afghanistan Ali Bagheri Kian and Amir Khan Mottaki, a representative of the Taliban movement*, discussed cooperation between Tehran and Kabul, as well as the situation in the Gaza Strip, the Iranian Foreign Ministry reported on its official Telegram channel.
«Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri, during a telephone conversation… discussed bilateral cooperation, as well as the latest developments related to the war in Gaza and the crimes of the Israeli regime with Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Amir Khan Mottaki,» the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The Iranian diplomat stressed that Islamic countries, especially the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, need to put pressure on Israel to resolve the crisis in Gaza.
The acting Iranian Foreign Ministry also noted Tehran's desire to help Kabul overcome existing challenges and achieve progress as soon as possible and expressed the Iranian side's readiness to cooperate with Afghanistan in various areas.
On June 8, the second quadripartite meeting of the Regional Contact Group on Afghanistan was held in Tehran with the participation of representatives of Iran, Pakistan, India and Russia. The meeting discussed the common approaches of the participating countries to the upcoming third meeting of the UN Secretariat leadership with special representatives for Afghanistan in Doha from June 30 to July 1.
According to the IRNA agency, this is the second time a meeting of this format has been held. It was held for the first time in the first quarter of 2024 in Kabul at the initiative of Iran, and was attended by special representatives and ambassadors of countries in the region and neighboring states of Afghanistan.
