The head of the European Commission promised a “tough” 14th package of sanctions against Russia

BRUSSELS, June 20 The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the 14th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation will be “tough” and will affect energy, technology, and banking services.< br />Belgium, which previously holds the presidency of the EU Council, reported that the permanent representatives of the EU countries on Thursday agreed on the 14th package of anti-Russian sanctions. It will include both new measures and measures to combat circumvention of existing restrictions.

«I welcome the agreement on the 14th package of sanctions against Russia. This is a tough package, it will further deprive Russia of access to key technologies, further income from energy, will affect the shadow fleet and shadow banking network abroad,» von der Leyen wrote on the X network.

According to Western media, sanctions may include restrictions on the use of EU infrastructure for the re-export of Russian liquefied gas, as well as blacklisting of tankers carrying Russian oil. In addition, the European Union will expand the “black lists” to include more than 40 new individuals and organizations.
It was previously reported that the approval of sanctions was delayed due to Germany’s position on tightening rules for subsidiaries of European companies operating in the EU, but later a compromise was found.

The Russian Federation has repeatedly stated that the country will cope with the sanctions pressure that the West began to exert on Russia several years ago and continues to increase. Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev noted that the West lacks the courage to admit the failure of sanctions against Russia. In Western countries themselves, opinions are often heard that anti-Russian sanctions are ineffective. Russian President Vladimir Putin previously stated that the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy of the West, and sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy. According to him, the main goal of the West is to worsen the lives of millions of people.
13 packages of sanctions have been introduced against the Russian Federation, citizens of the country and organizations since February 2022. In total, 1,725 individuals and 420 organizations are subject to European restrictions. EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing funds to those on sanctions lists. Individuals are additionally subject to a travel ban, which prevents them from entering the European Union or transiting through the EU.
