In Volgograd, a Wagner PMC mercenary who returned from the war received a suspended sentence for stealing stewed meat and socks and storing ammunition

The Krasnooktyabrsky District Court of Volgograd imposed three years and two months probation on Wagner PMC mercenary Sergei Kaforin in the case of theft and illegal storage of ammunition. The verdict was published on the court’s website; attention was drawn to it by the publication “Caucasus. Realities.»

The verdict for the participant in the war in Ukraine was handed down on June 3. Kaforin was found guilty of two counts of shoplifting (Part 1 of Article 158 of the Criminal Code and paragraph “a” of Part 2 of Article 158 of the Criminal Code).

The mercenary stole 21 cans of stew worth 3,108 rubles from the Magnit supermarket. He “disposed of the canned goods at his own discretion.” Then the man “entered into a criminal conspiracy” with his acquaintance named Anokhin to commit another theft. Anokhin took 17 pairs of socks, shaving balm and several cans of coffee worth a total of 3,461 rubles from the shelves of Magnit.

During a search in connection with the theft case, in the annex near Kaforin’s house, security forces found 11 cartridges — they were in the pocket of a backpack. According to a war participant, he found them in September 2023 “somewhere in the forest, in the bushes.” The court found Kaforin guilty of illegal possession of ammunition (Part 1 of Article 222 of the Criminal Code). He admitted guilt and repented.

When passing the sentence, the court took into account that Kaforin “is characterized satisfactorily at his place of residence, and is characterized positively at the place of serving his sentence in PKU IK-9” and at the same time “has not been convicted.” Apparently, the man was recruited into the Wagner PMC from a colony, after leaving which he received a pardon.

The court took into account that Kaforin was awarded the gratitude of the head of the self-proclaimed LPR, medals from the Wagner PMC and helps raise two minor children.

The verdict cites the conclusion of a forensic psychiatric examination, which concluded that Kaforin has addictions. The decision also discloses information that he has been diagnosed with HIV infection and hepatitis.

As Mediazona wrote, the recruiters of the Wagner PMC, among other things, took prisoners with such diagnoses to war and distributed them into a separate Umbrella Squad.

As noted by “Caucasus. Realities,” Kaforin had previously been repeatedly convicted of theft. He was sentenced in cases of fraud, robbery, drug possession and “keeping a brothel.” Kaforin was last convicted in 2021 — he was sent to a colony on charges of theft and causing grievous bodily harm.
